Jose Mourinho faces embarrassment after latest Luke Shaw injury

LUKE SHAW will miss the rest of the season after suffering ligament damage to his foot.

The Manchester United defender was forced off after just nine minutes in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Swansea.

After the match, manager Jose Mourinho appeared to question the severity of the injury following an in-and-out season for the former Southampton star.

Mourinho claimed Shaw must have sustained a “big injury” for him to come off so early.

And it appears the left-back, who has had a tetchy relationship with Mourinho, may have indeed picked up an injury which forces him to miss the rest of the season.

Shaw will see a specialist today but is expected to be out for four weeks.

The news will be a major blow to Mourinho, who is facing an injury crisis in defence ahead of his packed fixture schedule.

Marcos Rojo will miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury while Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are yet to resume training after toe and knee problems respectively.

United face Celta Vigo in the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday and could play seven times in 20 days if they reach the Europa League final.

Shaw has struggled under Mourinho with fitness problems and lack of form.

Mourinho has criticised Shaw for his performance leading Stan Collymore to launch a strong defence of the left-back.

“Having been in the same situation, I am really worried for Luke Shaw,” Collymore wrote in his Daily Mirror column.

“Jose Mourinho had another pop at him after he went off early against Swansea, saying: “I think Luke Shaw’s must be a big injury, because to leave the pitch after nine minutes, I am expecting a very big injury.”

“The worst thing you can do is question a player’s professionalism. And Mourinho has essentially called Shaw a liar.

“He would never do the same to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“It is not the first time the Manchester United manager has targeted Shaw this season.”
